After restoring a demon-possessed man and raising Jairus’ daughter from death, Jesus was still traveling when a woman came rushing through the crowd who had suffered with an issue of blood for 12 whole years! No one could heal her. She pressed her way through the crowd, came up behind Him, touched the hem of His garment and immediately she was healed! This woman was not only sick physically, but also carried the stigma of ritual uncleanliness which undoubtedly added to her misery. In constant desperation, she spent all of her money on healthcare. With extensive imagination, we may comprehend some of her daily suffering and humiliation! What significance can be found in the fact that the woman believed that all she had to do was touch His garment for healing?
This woman had tremendous faith in Jesus Christ. She felt that even to touch His clothing would create a miracle. Was it the clothes or the touch that healed her? It was the power of God working through Jesus Christ. She was aware of her helplessness and her obvious need. Her touching His clothes publicly displayed her faith in His works. By asking who touched His clothes, Jesus used her proclamation of faith to help witness to others. This is an excellent example of the use of the gift of faith.
We display God’s love through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. When we are being tried in stressful times, especially when we are experiencing any kind of illness, Jesus desires to help us continue living by faith and trusting in His compassion and mercy. We can ask God, through Jesus Christ, to help us live by faith. What a privilege to have a relationship in which we can grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Why was it that Jesus did not let the woman just melt back into the crowd after she was healed? What do we learn about Jesus from this story? What does it mean to have a touch of faith? Jesus knew someone had touched Him when He felt his power escape. The woman realized that she was noticed, and came trembling before she fell at His feet. Jesus is the One we can always rely on for incredible miracles. Meanwhile, let us continue to sing praises to His name for all the love and mercy we have received. After this woman did all humanly possible to save herself, and then came Jesus, the One who did all the incredible miracles! We too can come to the Lord as this woman did in confidence and humble submission as we maintain faith and trust in Him. After she touched the hem of His garment, she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. What a mighty God we serve!
