Bridge Corner: October 13, 2016
Hello and welcome to the Tidewater Bridge Unit (TBU).
MATTHEW WON! The American Bridge Association’s (ABA) Mid-Atlantic Section Tournament started off with a bang – bridge games scheduled throughout the day, great places to dine, beautiful location, and the opportunity to socialize with old friends and to make new friends. The Mid-Atlantic Tournament offered Open Pair, Knockout Team, Stratified Swiss Team, and Modified Round Robin games. Yes, folks, we played bridge and we played hard; each participant determined to win BIG!
Alas, on Saturday evening October 8, by unanimous vote, Hurricane Matthew was declared overall winner. Not to worry, we are already planning and looking forward to the Mid-Atlantic Section Tournament in 2017. You are invited. Here are details for upcoming opportunities to compete and/or have fun with the TBU family:
On October 22, 2016, the New Journal & Guide will once again observe its annual ”Impacting Lives Breakfast,” to celebrate its 116th year. The program will take place at the Murry Banquet Center, 455 Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk. It will be a breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon. Individual tickets are $35 a piece; each table will seat 10 guests. If you would like to sit with the Tidewater Bridge Unit members, please contact Jennifer Douglas at (757) 701-0640.
And of course, we offer bridge classes. Learn to play bridge and have fun while you are learning! New bridge classes are starting soon; be a part of a winning pair! TBU is offering affordable bridge classes at the Berkley Senior Center. Each course is six weeks long and the cost is $30. From 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., there will be instruction (lecture); from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., students will work with practice hands/deals. A minimum of three students is required to run a class. The Basic Bridge class is in session on Tuesday mornings at 9:15 a.m. Register now for our upcoming classes. Don’t be left out – register TODAY!
