Opening lead: ♠3

Bridge is a game of choices; do I take the finesse or play for the drop, try to end play the opponent or play the hand wide open. The opening lead may help declarer in deciding how he may develop a plan to make the contract. Most assuredly, the bidding plays a big part in how declarer plays the hand. The bidding on this hand is straightforward.
South overcalls 1 notrump with sixteen high card points and the opponent’s suit well stopped. North raises to 3 notrump with nine points plus one point for the fifth diamond.
West leads the ♠3, fourth best from his longest suit, and East plays the king. There are plenty of tricks but you must direct your attention to not losing three or four spades and two diamonds. East must hold the diamond ace and maybe the diamond queen for his opening bid, therefore you can’t keep him out of the lead. You must let the king of spades and the spade return hold, just in case they are split 4-3. Win the third spade and start diamonds without letting West into the lead. Simply cover any diamond West plays.
This “safety play” in spades is rewarded as you simply cover any diamond card West plays and East has to win with the singleton ace. You win any return even if East returns a heart, you let it go to dummy’s jack. Come to hand and play diamonds again, finessing for the queen, winning ten tricks altogether.
