Bridge Corner: June 29, 2017

Hello and welcome to the Tidewater Bridge Unit (TBU).

We would like to thank our TBU members who support/participate in community activities: YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Over the last couple of months, four of our members played key roles in projects and/or programs to benefit others. Barbara Whitfield (BW), LaFrancis Rodgers (LR), William “Bill” Ward (WW), and Cindy Burrell-Jones (CBJ) shared a brief interview – let’s listen in on the conversation:

TBU: What has been your most recent community involvement and why do you volunteer?

BW: I participated in the “Dancing with the Stars” program sponsored by the City of Norfolk and hosted by the Berkley Senior Center. I thoroughly enjoy line-dancing and it is a form of exercise. Supporting community activities is my way of “giving back” for the many kindnesses I have received.
LR: My most recent community involvement was spearheading the 14th Annual Organ Donation Gala. I volunteer to host this annual event because I have been blessed as a fourteen-year heart transplant recipient.
WW: The New Chesapeake Men for Progress sponsored a Breakfast celebrating the academic achievements of African-American males in Chesapeake middle and high schools; as a member of this organization, I was honored to work where needed. I volunteer because I decided long ago that I wanted to be a part of the “solution” to the issues in our communities. I realized early on that to be a game-changer I had to be willing to serve.
CBJ: My most recent community activity was working to support the Chosen Vessels Rites of Passage Mentoring Program. This is a mentoring program for young girls between the ages of 12 and 17. With the help of two other church members, I initiated the program in 1999 and served as co-leader until 2009. I received the Love for Christ Mother Price Award in March, 2017. For a very long time, I have enjoyed helping people. It stated when my son joined the Boy Scouts of America and I volunteered to serve as a Den Mother for over five years.
