Hello and welcome to Tidewater Bridge Club.

What is your bid?

Question 3: As South, what is your bid?

A. 3 Hearts
B. 3 Diamonds
C. Pass
D. 4 Hearts

Your Hand

♥ K Q J 10 8
♦ A Q 9 4
♣ 10 7 6 5

South West North East
—- —- —- 1♣
1♥ 1♠ 2♥ 2♠
?

Answer:
3♦: Your hand is very distributional and you want your partner to know that, so you use the “show and tell” strategy. Part needs to know that you have at least nine cards in two suits, and enough points to bid at the three-level. It would be great to have another diamond, but your void in spades gives extra value to your hand. How will Part know this isn’t Help Suit Game Try? Because you two are the competing bidders, not Opener and Responder.

Question 4: You are on lead against a game contract. What can you deduce from the bidding and what should you lead?

A. Spade 2
B. Heart King
C. Diamond Ace
D. Club 2

Pass 2♥ Pass 2♠
Pass 4♠ Pass Pass

Answer:
♣2: You can deduce that West has a source of tricks in the form of a long Heart suit (2♥ promised at least five) and the strong probability that your ♥K is now going to win a heart trick. Under these circumstances, the strategy is to “attack.” The best way to do that is to try a low Club lead, hoping to grab some tricks in the minors before they get dumped on dummy’s Hearts.
