August 21: BTW Alumni Choir To Perform In Concert At New Calvary

NORFOLK
On Sunday, August 21, 2016 at 5 p.m., The Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1958 will present, in concert, “O Sing Your Songs” performed by The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Choir under the direction of Mr. Julius E. McCullough.  This amazing and spirit filled choir will perform a potpourri of musical styles celebrating the greatness of God. You are cordially invited to enjoy a great musical evening which will be held at New Calvary Baptist Church, 800 East Virginia Beach Boulevard.

Mr. McCullough has crafted a wonderful musical program for your delight and is honored to have as his accompanist, Mr. Randy Walston, piano and Mr. Melvin Jordan, percussionist. He is also honored to have as his guest performers, Mr. Gregory Gardner, bass, Mrs. Geraldine T. Boone, organ and Mr. Tony Watford, bass guitar.  Soloists for the evening are Mrs. Sandra Spellman, soprano, Mrs. Beverly Lawton, contralto, Mr. Ronald Myers, tenor, Mrs. LaVerne Wiggins Reed, soprano, Mrs. Vanessa Harvey, soprano and Mr. Julius E. McCullough, baritone.

The Booker T. Washington Alumni Choir was organized in 1994 following a reunion of the BTW Class of 1958 when Ann McInnis, the former director, was asked to coordinate the music for that occasion. The singers in the group that she organized for that program, most of whom had sung under the direction of Mr. I. Sherman Greene in the infamous Booker T. Washington High School Choir, presented a program that was so successful that they were motivated to organize and continue blending their voices in song. Shortly thereafter, the Choir welcomed members of other BTW graduating classes and the group expanded to include alumni from the classes of 1943 through 1992, as well as relatives and friends of BTW graduates.

The birth of this outstanding Choir became the vehicle through which aesthetic music of the highest quality would perpetuate the legacy of Mr. I. Sherman Greene, who was one of the greatest musicians and choral directors in the history of the Hampton Roads area and beyond. Over the years, the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Choir has developed a large following and is proud to have added to the esthetic value of the Hampton Roads Community. This concert is open and free to the public. To continue the growth and outstanding legacy of the BTW Alumni Choir, singers from the various classes of BTW High School and friends are welcome to join this iconic choir by calling its director at (757) 553-7545.
