Black History Month Saturday Lectures
CHESAPEAKE
A weekly Saturdays series of free lectures are planned in observance of Black History Month by local historian Dr. E. Curtis Alexander. All of these events will be held at The Cottages @ Great Bridge, 625 Bette’s Way, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Advance registration is requested because of limited seating.
Dr. Alexander is the Curator of the Bells Mills Historical Research and Restoration Society Inc. in Chesapeake.
In addition to the planned lectures by Dr. Alexander, other activities will be ongoing, including an African Heritage Booksellers Marketplace from 1-5 p.m.
On Saturday, February 6 from 2 – 4 p.m., his topic is “Racial Sensitivity and Tolerance: Does The People of Color Appellation Undermine Affirmative Action?”
The following Saturday, February 13, from noon – 1:30 p.m., Ms. Barbara Alexander will discuss “How To Help Your Child Develop A Love For reading Books From Listening To African Folk Tales [PreK to Grade 3].”
That same day from 2 – 4 p.m., Dr. Alexander will discuss “Black Family Genealogical Research Studies With And Without A Computer.”
On Saturday, February 20, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Dr. Alexander will discuss “Mentoring Young Black Males For Success Not Survival: Parents To Grandparents To Intergenerational Parenting.”
On Saturday, February 27, from noon – 1:30 p.m., Dr. Alexander will present the Documentary Showing of PBS Emmy Nominate, “Civil War In Hampton Roads: A New Beginning.”
From 2 – 4 p.m., he will discuss “Is The Celebration of Black History Month Still Needed and Really Necessary?”
