Social and Civic Whirl
Social and Civic: Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation Will Offer Two Scholarships In May

The Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association (NPBA), which is over a century old, is opened to licensed attorneys, law students, legal administrators and local military legal personnel. An arm of the NPBA, the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation shows their support of the local community through their mission to “educate the public about the role played by law in their daily lives and its importance; to promote the administration of justice; and to enhance the image of the legal profession in our local community.” In carrying out this mission, the attorney members of the NPBA Foundation offer scholarships to graduating seniors from high schools and home schooled senior students from Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Suffolk. The winners of these two very competitive scholarships in the amount of $2,500 and $1,000 will be announced in May 2016.
It is the hope of the members of the NPBA Foundation that upon completion of their higher education studies the students will return to the Hampton Roads community and “become leaders and outstanding citizens,” however, going into the legal profession is not a requirement for applying for the scholarships. Applications will be based on financial need, grades, school involvement, extra-curricular activities, and an essay on a current issue involving student rights.
A completed application packet (must follow directions) must be submitted, with a telephone number for contact and all required documents, to the Foundation Scholarship Chair by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2016 (No Exceptions). Mail your completed application packet to: Robert Powell, III, Esq., Scholarship Chairperson, Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation at 999 Waterside Drive/Suite 1330, Norfolk, Virginia 23510. Incomplete Application packets will not be considered!
