Honoring The Dream

PORTSMOUTH
More than 350 attended the 2016 Epsilon Nu Lambda Chapter (Portsmouth) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast. During this annual event, for the first time, the members of the Chapter awarded college scholarships to two young men to help fund their pursuits of higher education. The recipients of the scholarships were Aaron V. Brown and John M. Brooks.
Also, as is customary at this event, special honors in the name of one of the founders of the chapter, Dr. Hugo A. Owens, Sr. – the Dr. Hugo A. Owens, Sr. Humanitarian Award – were presented to citizens who exemplified the qualities and commitment to the community as did the award’s namesake. These awards were presented to Bro. Robert (Bobby) Scott (3rd District-VA) and Portsmouth’s Commonwealth Attorney, Stephanie Morales.
“We are extremely proud to have chosen these two deserving scholarship recipients and Dr. Hugo A. Owens, Sr. Humanitarian honorees,” says Chapter President Trevis Johnson. “It has always been our chapter’s initiative to encourage the advancement of our hopefuls and honor the commitment of our leaders!”
Always devoted to sparking social and political dialogue, this year’s annual event was themed “Justice or Just Us,” with Rev. Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns, Sr., Pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church (Norfolk), serving as the event’s keynote speaker.
