I. Sherman Greene Chorale to Present Black Composers’ Concert

The I. Sherman Greene Chorale, Inc. will present its annual, “A Salute to Black Composers” Concert on Sunday, February 18, 2018, 4 p.m. at Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk. This year’s concert will feature the singers of North Carolina A & T University Choir (Greensboro), Maestro Travis Alexander, director; Oscar Smith High School Varsity Chorale (Chesapeake), Mrs. Lydia T. Richards; the M.S.G. Acoustic Blues Trio, and the Chorale.

The Chorale was founded by Mr. l. Sherman Greene, long-term choral director at Norfolk’s, Booker T. Washington High School. Originally, the Chorale consisted solely of Booker T. Washington alumni who had sung under Mr. Greene’s direction. Through the years, membership expanded and currently includes other community singers as well as undergraduate and graduate college students.

Following Mr. Greene’s passing, his legacy has lived on under several successive Chorale musical directors to include Dr. Carl Haywood, Terry William Butler and Dr. Sheila M. Harleston. Elizabeth Vaughan Eccles, who has served in this capacity since 2012, is a Booker T. Washington graduate and former choir student of Mr. Greene.

It remains the mission of the Chorale to promote Mr. Greene’s legacy through choral performances of time-tested and contemporary music. The musical performances of the I. Sherman Greene Chorale are designed to enlighten, energize and inspire audiences throughout the Hampton Roads area and beyond.

Requested donations for the February concert are $20 adults and $10 students at the door.
