Albany State’s Jackson named top D2 field athlete

Albany State men’s track and field athlete Cervantes Jackson has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coach Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II National Field Athlete of the Year.

The award is presented to Jackson after he won two national titles at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The award is voted on by USTFCCCA member coaches based on performances at both the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships n Bradenton, Florida, and the entire season.

Jackson, a sophomore computer science major from Bainbridge, Ga., entered the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with top-10 marks on the Descending Order List in the long jump, high jump and triple jump.

He won the triple jump (16.30m/53-5¾) and high jump (2.16m/7-1) championships while also finishing 4th in the long jump (7.60m/24-11¼), totaling 25 points for Albany State single handedly leading the Golden Rams an 8th-place finish.

Jackson’s national titles were the first for Albany State since 2009. That year, Ronnie McGirt won the 110-meter hurdles. McGirt was honored with a celebration on the ASU campus on June 21.

In addition, Jackson also received All-American status from the USTFCCCA getting the designation in all three events.
