STOP Plans 50th Anniversary Events
NORFOLK
The STOP Organization, the region oldest non-profit community action agency, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, culminating in a luncheon on November 21 at noon at the Marriott Chesapeake.
The theme for the agency’s Golden Anniversary celebration is “Celebrating 50 years of Supporting Transformational Opportunities for People.”
Each of the eight Hampton Roads localities served by STOP, Inc. and The Planning Council, located in Norfolk, founded the agency when the nation launched its War on Poverty, led by the Johnson Administration in 1965.
Therefore, to be honored during the anniversary event will be the mayors of the six cities (Chesapeake, Franklin, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach) which STOP serves today, and the Superintendents of the County Board of Supervisors from the two counties (Isle of Wight and Southampton) served by STOP.
In the final event highlighting its year-long celebration, the community will be invited to join STOP at its First Annual “Best of the Best” Holiday Basketball Classic scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 12 and 13, 2015.
For tickets for the luncheon and more information call (757) 858-1364.
