Noted Educator, Marva Collins, Dies At Age 78

Marva Collins, the educator who developed an award-winning system for educating black children in her Chicago private school, has died at age 78. Collins opened Westside Preparatory School in 1975 with $5,000 from her pension savings after working as a substitute teacher for 14 years in the Chicago public schools. 

Over time, Collins developed a system for educating poor black students in the  school she founded which made her a national icon and expert in education. Collins, 78, died on June 24 in Lowcountry in Bluffton, S.C.
