VSU Wins Freedom Classic

RICHMOND
The Virginia State Trojans men’s basketball team defeated the Virginia Union Panthers 82-72 in the Freedom Classic at the Richmond Coliseum on Sunday (Jan.14). VSU senior guard Trey Brown from Hampton, VA led the Trojans with 25 points. James Paige paced VUU with 21 points.
This year’s Freedom Classic honored Congressman Donald McEachin, whose 4th District covers parts of Chesapeake and the Greater Richmond area, with a Community Service Award.
Other activities included a gospel choir showcase, a drumline competition, and a special halftime performance by the VSU and VUU bands.
The Freedom Classic celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s theme, “Get Active,” encourages the community to get active about its education, finance, health, and community activism.
