Social and Civic Whirl: Corey D.B. Walker, PhD. Appointed Dean of Theology At Virginia Union University
Rev. Dr. Corey D. B. Walker, a Norfolk native, has been named Senior Vice President and Dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. This Professor of Religion and Society at Virginia Union graduated from Norview High School and received his undergraduate degree from Norfolk State University. His earned graduate degrees include receiving a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology; a Master of Theological Studies from The Divinity School of Harvard University; A Master of Arts, ad eundem, from Brown University; and a PhD in American Studies from The College of William and Mary.
Walker has had a myriad of experiences in his young adult life. He is the author of a book and has completed a manuscript for a second book and has written over 50 articles, reviews, book chapters and essays on history and religion. In addition Corey Walker has served as a Book Review Editor and an Associate Editor of The Journal of the American Academy of Religion. Dean Walker co-directed and co-produced a documentary, Fifeville, with, Kevin Jerome Everson, a Professor at The University of Virginia.
As he continued on his journey to becoming a Vice President and Dean at Virginia Union, Corey D. B. Walker had an outstanding career in the higher education arena. His collegiate work has taken him from Boston, to Germany, to Charlottesville and to Winston-Salem. Walker has served as Vice Rector of the Board of Visitors at Norfolk State University and has been actively engaged in many civic endeavors.
Rev. Dr. Corey D. B. Walker was licensed at his home church, Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia; and ordained at the Second Baptist Church, West End, located in Richmond, Virginia. Rev. Dr. Albert Paul Brinson preached his Ordination Sermon; Dr. Carthene R. Bazemore-Walker, Camryn P. D. Walker and Celene E. B. Walker (wife and children) presented Rev. Corey with the Bible; and the Hymnal was presented to Corey by his parents Melvin and Gloria Walker and his brothers Michael Walker and Mark Walker.
In his rise to becoming Dean of The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology he worked in several ministerial capacities At Ebenezer Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and Chaplain at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail in Charlottesville, Virginia. Rev. Walker also performed duties related to the ministry at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church.
It only seems fitting that Rev. Dr. Corey D. B. Walker should be Dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. After all, he is an alumnus of the Theology School and more fitting is the fact that REV. DR. COREY B. D. WALKER and REV. DR. SAMUEL DEWITT PROCTOR both had their FORMULATIVE YEARS in BANK STREET MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH!!!
