Social and Civic Whirl: The Woman’s Club of Norfolk Begins Their 101st Club Year

At the end of the 100th year of serving the community and a wonderful celebration of togetherness of civic and social minded women, in the South Hampton roads area, an informal installation of the newly elected officers was conducted by Judge (Retired) Gwendolyn J. Jackson. This gave the officers the privilege and right to conduct business in preparation for the upcoming club year.

The new club year was started with meditation and prayer by the chaplain Alveta Green. This was followed with a formal installation of officers by, Mercedes Coveney, the former President. The newly installed officers are as follows: Brenda Neumon Lewis, President; Vice President, Yvonne Brown; Secretary Sligh-Jackson; Charlotte Maul, Financial Secretary; Treasurer, Myrna Simmons; Ola A. Goss, Assistant Recording Secretary; Parliamentarian, Ruth G. Jarvis; and Alveta Green, Chaplain.

Following a delicious meal prepared by Thompson Hospitality, in the Faculty Dining Room/Scott Dozier Hall on Norfolk State’s campus, the business session of the organization ensued. Some committee reports were given and others postponed until the November meeting. Gisele Bullock will chair the Program Committee placing more emphasis on informative civic matters. Members were encouraged to sign up for other club committees. Although the Woman’s Club gives financially to our service projects, President Lewis emphasized the importance of personal involvement. A main project through the years, of the club, has been Jacox Elementary School; however, other organizations are being considered for the club’s assistance.

Congratulations was extended to Alveta Green whose deceased husband, Walter H. Green, Sr., was honored by having Philpotts Road given a honorary designation of being named Walter H. Green, Sr. Road because of his work spearheading the Philpotts Road Improvement Group. Kudos to Alveta and Brenda who are being honored by their respective alma maters as distinguished alumna. The meeting was adjourned with a closing prayer by the chaplain Alveta Green.
