Social and Civic Whirl: South Hampton Roads Bar Assoc. to host Seniors Law day

On Tuesday, July 21, 2015, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. the student center on Norfolk State University campus will be the venue for Seniors Law day.  This free and open to the public event, for seniors and their adult children, is being hosted by the South Hampton Roads Bar Association (SHRBA) in partnership with Norfolk State University, the School of Social Work at Norfolk State and the Urban League Guild (an affiliate of the Urban League) of Hampton Roads. 

 Attorneys and other experts in the field of senior care will facilitate the discussion.  The audience will get answers to topics such as the following:  How does Medicaid Work?; Will I Lose My Home?; Adult Guardianship and Mental Health Issues; How Can Elder Abuse and Fraud be Prevented?; and What is Hospice?  There will be time for the quests to have questions answered between panel informational sessions. In addition to the information being presented, there will be light refreshments served.

FREE CIVIC ACTIVITIES SPONSORED BY THE URBAN LEAGUE of HAMPTON ROADS

The Urban League of Hampton Roads/ULHRs (formerly the Urban League of Tidewater) was chartered in August 1978.  Since that time, the ULHRs mission has been “to assist African-Americans and other minorities in achieving social justice and economic equality through the development of programs that help minorities achieve a full measure of participation in the economic, political and social life of Hampton Roads.”

During the month of July, the Urban League of Hampton Roads will sponsor free activities for the citizens of this area.  On Saturday, July 11, 13, and 23, 2015 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. there will be a VDHA first time homebuyer workshop at 5700 Thurston Avenue/Suite 101 in Virginia Beach.  Also at the Thurston Avenue address, there will be a foreclosure group workshop beginning at 6:30 p.m. on July 16, 23 and 30. For both of these workshops, you may register at 673-0851.  Work development information can be obtained, in Norfolk, at the Huntersville Recreation Center from 10 a.m. until around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2015 and in Hampton at the Y H Thomas Community Center, also from 10 a.m. until around 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 30, 2015.  Call 226-7589 to register for both dates.  A mortgage solution workshop will be held at Y H Thomas Community Center located in Hampton from 6 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.  Call 673-0851 for more information.
