Social and Civic Whirl: Marian Manor An Adventure in assisted living

On Sunday evening, August 9, 2015, Marian Manor, an assisted living village sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, celebrated 26 years of living a “Charmed Life.”  Mrs. Leslie Cobbs, a longtime Norfolk resident and a retired educator now a resident of Marian Manor, and her daughter, the Honorable Judge Leslie S. Turner of Columbia, Maryland, invited several friends to be guests at Marian Manor’s 26th Anniversary celebration.  Guests included Shirley W. Nottingham, Clarence White, Ferne Taylor and Ola A. Goss.

The theme for this 26th Anniversary affair was “An Evening under the Stars.”  Wonderful music was provided by the Hampton Roads Metro Band featuring Dick Schroeder music director/conductor and Ralph Spoettle assistant director.  Karen Land, Executive Director of Marian Manor, Welcomed the guests.  Playing of the “Star Spangled Banner” followed the Welcome. The program continued with several favorite tunes reminiscence of times gone by such as “Manhattan Beach,” “Gaslight Gaieties,” “Second Suite in F for Military Band, and “God of Our Fathers” all prior to intermission.  After the break, when the audience enjoyed a wonderful, tasty buffet feast and the people continued to eat, the band returned for the second half of the program.  It started with the “Armed Forces Medley” which was followed by “The Homefront: Musical Memories from World War II.” Before the playing of “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” a beautiful rendition of “The Saints’ Hallelujah” was performed. After spending a lovely evening under the stars and listening to great music, the program came to a close with remarks by Karen Land.
