The Vice Chair of the Black Law Student Association (BLSA), Brittany Tabb, Welcomed the guests to their 2nd annual Making Black History Banquet. Chelsea Mack, Chaplain of the BLSA, prayed the Opening Prayer followed by a delicious buffet dinner prepared by the dining staff of Regent’s University.

The Mistress of Ceremonies, for this wonderful program, Joyce Marie Plummer, was introduced by, Natasha Johnson, Chair of the BLSA. Prior to introducing the Making Black History Award Recipients, Attorney Plummer gave some inspiring remarks. She reminded the students that Regent University is just a point on their journey to becoming lawyers. The first recipient was Helvi Holland, Esq. the first female and the first African-American to be the City Attorney in Suffolk, Virginia. Her accomplishments have included being a governor’s appointee to the state’s Juvenile Justice Board; and President of the Old Dominion Bar Association. Plummer reminded the students to count their blessings; respect knowledge and demeanor; and that Law is a call – not a piece of paper with JD behind their name.

Attorney Marcus Scriven was the other recipient. Mr. Scriven is the President of the Urban League Guild of Hampton Roads; head of Scriven Law Offices; and is a member of several bar associations. Scrivens emphasized the importance of getting involved in community service and volunteer organizations – giving back to the community. Several door prizes were given to guests before the Closing Remarks given by the Chair of Regent’s Black Law Student Association – Natasha Johnson.
