Social and Civic Whirl: Auditions for The Boys Choir of Hampton Roads
As the school year begins and you (adults) and your sons or other young men you know, from all over the Hampton Roads area, who are looking for a creative musical outlet – look no further!!! The Boys Choir of Hampton Roads will hold auditions on Thursday, September 10, 2015, beginning at 5 p.m. Covenant Presbyterian Church, located at 913 Covenant Street in the Broad Creek section of Norfolk (near Norfolk State) will be the site for the auditions.
Founded in 1997 by Mrs. Geraldine T. Boone, as the Park Place Boys Choir, The Boys Choir of Hampton Roads has grown to be one of the premier young choir groups in the area. In addition to being a creative musical outlet for our male youth, the choir gives them the exposure to positive activities. They have performed at the Granby Street Meet and Greet; Norfolk Pre-illumination Parade; Attucks Theatre “Nutcracker;” with the Virginia Symphony; and will perform at this year’s Neon Festival. Exposure for these young boys has not been local activities. The choir has traveled to Nashville, Tennessee; Dallas, Texas; Silver Spring, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; and to Colorado to perform at the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) Conventions which is held each year in July. Educational opportunities that are provided include community service (needed as they look toward college and employment); develop discipline as they learn music theory ear training; note reading; esthetic awareness; and musicianship.
For more information about this wonderful musical training ground for our young boys as they grow into their teen years and beyond, contact Mr. Julius E. McCullough, Artist Director, at 553-7545 or Mrs. Geraldine T. Boone, Accompanist/Founder, at 436-3746.
