Second Calvary Baptist Church Celebrates 137th Church Anniversary and the 33rd Pastoral Anniversary during June

NORFOLK
Second Calvary Baptist Church is observing a season of celebration during the month of June with the observance of the church’s 137th Anniversary and the 33rd Anniversary of Pastor Geoffrey V. Guns and First Lady Rosetta H. Guns. The month kicked off with the Church Anniversary on Sunday, June 5th at the 7:45 and 10 a.m. worship services with the theme, “Reaping the Exceeding Riches of God’s Grace” from Ephesians 3:20.

The month continued with a Men’s Day/ Father’s Day celebration, with a Men’s Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, June 18th with the speaker being Mayor-elect of Norfolk, Kenneth C. Alexander. The guest minister on Sunday at 7:45 was Dr. Robert Rodgers, Senior Pastor of Pulaski Baptist Church, Carrsville, Virginia. The Pastor and First Lady will celebrate their 33rd Pastoral Anniversary on Sunday, June 26th. The guest minister for the occasion will be Rev. K. David Johnson, Senior Pastor of Third Baptist Church, Toledo, Ohio. Immediately following worship, the entire community is invited to join Second Calvary for a Community Picnic with plenty of food and fun for persons of all ages, children through seniors.

Second Calvary was organized by a small band of worshippers on what was known then as Simpson Farm. Rev. Jackson served for a short time as Pastor. In 1879 Rev. Zachariah Hughes became Pastor. The church’s Annex is named in his honor. The church moved to its current location in 1953 and renovated its sanctuary in 1992. Under Pastor Guns’ leadership, the church is organized around a ministry model known as the Ministry Organization and Leadership Model, which consists of eight core ministries, Pastoral Care, Praise and Worship, Congregational Spirituality, Services and Helps, Social Justice, Missions and Evangelism, Nurture and Discipleship and Innovation and Technology.

The church has sent numerous missionaries to serve abroad in Kenya, Nigeria, Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, Aruba, Haiti, Israel, Panama, Trinidad and Tanzania. The church is currently constructing a new parking lot at the corner of Corprew Avenue and Ballentine Blvd. The church has ministries to serve all ages. You are encouraged to visit Second Calvary at one of its worship services: Saturdays at 6 p.m., or Sundays at 7:45 and 10 a.m. You may also listen to their broadcast on WPCE at noon on Saturdays or through live streaming of services on Ustream.
