Restoration of Rights Clinic

On March 17, 2012, from 9 a.m. – Noon, the Portsmouth alumnae chapters of Gamma Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Zeta Pi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. will host an informational event on the Restoration of Rights.  The clinic will take place on the 4th floor of the Portsmouth Social Services Building at 1701 High Street.

 

This extremely important affair will feature information on applying for the Restoration of your civil right; question and answer session; one-on-one assistance with completing applications and forms; and notaries will be available on-site. THE HISTORIC BANK STREET MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH CELEBRATES WOMEN’S DAY

 

The Historic Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, located at 7036 Chesapeake Blvd., Norfolk, will be hosting Women’s Day Worship Service on Sunday March 11, 2021 at 11 a.m.  The chairpersons for the event are Mrs. Nanocie “Toni” Diggs and Dr. Cathy Jackson.  The theme for this celebration is “Christian Women Walking in the Footsteps of Herstory.”  Reverend Dr. Joan S. Parrott will deliver the morning sermon. She is currently the Executive Minister of First Baptist Church in Hampton.  Prior to this assignment, Dr. Parrott served as the Executive Pastor of the 11,000 member University Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Music for the Sunday service  will be provided by the Women’s Day Choir under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Vaughan Eccles.

 

Other activities during the “Women’s Week of Activities” will include bible study on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 6 p.m. followed by prayer  service at 7:30pm.  On Saturday, March 10th from 2 – 3:30 p.m., the ladies of the church are sponsoring an afternoon tea.  Pastries and tea will be served as attendees are being entertained by several local performers.  All women are requested to wear gloves and fancy hats to this activity.  For more information, please contact the church office at (7575) 857-0197 or by email at bsmbs@bankstchurch.org.

“STOP BEFORE IT STARTS” CONFERENCE

 

On March 10, 2012, from 10 a.m. – Noon, The Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is sponsoring “STOP BEFORE IT STARTS” CONFERENCE.  This event will be held at Parkway Elementary School located at 4180 O’Hare Drive in Virginia Beach.  The goal of this extremely needed conference is to educate youth on the warnings, dangers and consequences of DATING VIOLENCE.

The presenters are Kristen James of The E3 Center, LLC in Virginia Beach; Monica Williams from the Center for Sexual Assault Survivors in Newport News; and information will be available concerning the legal ramifications of DATING VIOLENCE.  Group mentoring sessions will follow the presentations.

“A SALUTE TO BLACK COMPOSERS”

 

Under the direction of Dr. Sheila McDonald Harleston, The I. Sherman Greene Chorale, Inc. presented  its 40th Anniversary Celebration honoring the memory, of the founder, Mr. Isaac Sherman Greene. The Chorale was organized in 1972, as a civic musical ensemble, after Mr. Greene had conducted a successful performance of Samuel Coleridge –Taylor’s Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast for the Annual Negro Week Celebration. Greene’s original choir  members were his former students/singers from Norfolk’s Booker T. Washington High School.

This wonderful “Salute to Black Composers,” through the melodious voices of the choirs, featured The Booker T. Washington Choir; The Booker T. Washington Alumni Choir; and The I. Sherman Greene Chorale. Some of the composers honored were Roland Carter, Sloan Cary, Marvin V. Curtis, Carl Haywood, Adolphus Hailstork, Undine Smith Moore, Rosephany Powell and John W. Work.

Please join the Chorale, as they continue their 40th Anniversary Celebration honoring the memory of I. Sherman Greene, for their Spring Concert on May 6, 2012 at Grace Episcopal Church located on Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia.  The fee for this affair is $20 for adults and $10 for children/students.
