Remembering Our Heroes

CHESAPEAKE
This historic Memorial is located in the Unknown and Known Afro-Union Civil War Soldiers Memorial in Bells Mill section of Chesapeake, Va. and pays tribute to the men from that region who fought valiantly during the Civil War. The Memorial is the only one of its kind in the Commonwealth dedicated to saluting Afro-Union Soldiers and Sailor Patriot Heroes. It is maintained by the Bells Mills Historical Research and Restoration Society, Inc., under the leadership of Historian and Researcher Dr. E. Curtis Alexander of Chesapeake. For the 19th year on Memorial Day, Dr. Alexander conducted an ceremony Monday at the memorial site to honor the Afro-Union warriors and their descendants.
