Queen Street Hosting Month Long March Spring Revival

For a second year, the excitement of March Madness has taken on a new meaning at Queen Street Baptist Church.  “We’re shifting the focus from the college basketball tournament to revival for church and community,” says Dr. Glenn E. Porter, senior pastor.
Porter explains, “Instead of competition, we’re focused on Christ.  It’s March Gladness 2016!”
The March Gladness 2016 Spring Revival: “Fanning the Flame” (2 Timothy 1:6-14) will feature four local pastors and their church choirs on Wednesdays throughout the month.  It will be a time of anointed preaching, powerful worship and dynamic praise.

Dr. William Marcus Small, senior pastor at New Calvary Baptist Church, kicked off the revival series on Wed., Mar. 2.  Small has served as senior pastor at New Calvary since 2009.  He also serves a member of the Board of Trustees of the Samuel D. Proctor Conference.
Rev. Bobby A. Bowser, senior pastor at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, preached Wed., Mar. 9.  Bowser has served at Mt. Lebanon for nine years.
Rev. Tyrone Jackson will preach Wed., Mar. 16.  Jackson is senior pastor at First Baptist Church of Campostella, Norfolk. 
Rev. Joseph A. Fleming of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, will close-out the revival on Wed., Mar. 23.  In addition to serving as assistant pastor at Third Baptist, Fleming is a board member for Portsmouth Public Schools.

The revivalists will be accompanied by their church choirs.  Services will be held at Queen Street Baptist Church, 413 E. Brambleton Ave. at 7 p.m.  The congregation’s Before & After Café will be open each night so that worshippers can enjoy a light meal, “in addition to being fed the Word of God.” 
“This the second year that we’ve conducted the month-long revival,” says Porter.  “It was a tremendous blessing last year.  We’re encouraging our neighboring pastors and churches to consider bringing their Wednesday night Bible study groups to the revival services.  It’s a great opportunity for churches to fellowship and worship together.”
This month, the Queen Street congregation will also observe the seventh anniversary of Porter as its senior pastor. The observance will culminate on Sun., Mar. 13 at 10 a.m.  Guest preacher for the special occasion will be Rev. Barbara D. Turner of Second Baptist Church, Roselle, N.J.  

An anniversary reception will be held immediately following the morning worship service.
Porter, a New Jersey native, was installed at the church in March 2009.  He is active in the church, academy and community.  He served as moderator for American Baptist Churches of the South, treasurer for Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers Conference, and president for the Division of Clergy, Baptist General Convention of Virginia.  He is an adjunct associate professor in religious studies at Tidewater Community College, and chaplain for Norfolk Police Department.  He is the author of From Mourning Into Dancing and The Glory of Gillfield & The Challenge of the Modern Church, and his work has appeared in The African-American Pulpit journal. 

Since accepting the pastorate at Queen Street, Porter has launched a renovation and building project for a family community life center. The new facility will promote quality life and a greater sense of community through inter-generational, social, education, recreational and cultural programs. The church will dedicate the new facility in the next few months.
Queen Street Baptist Church recently partnered with the City of Norfolk to become a site for the new Bank On Norfolk financial literacy program.  “QSBC is committed to being a blessing to this community,” says Porter.
