Pastor’s Corner: Part III: Major Historic Happenings In June 2015

By Elder Gerald DeForest Tyler

I trust that you read my previous two parts of this series about major happenings during the month of June 2015. This is the conclusive piece and without repeating anything from my previous columns as a brief introduction, I’m just jumping right back in where I left off last week. I believe history will record it as the largest and perhaps the most tragic “human massacre” perpetrated by one racist white man ever in the City of Charleston, SC. On June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof, a 21-year old white supremacist, went into the “Mother” Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston and shot and killed nine innocent African-American men and women simply because he hated Black folk – and said he wanted to start a “race war” obviously between Blacks and whites.

May I encourage you to join with me and millions of others who are already praying that God would take this awful tragedy that Roof and the devil intended to be bad for our country, and turn it around so that it has just the opposite affect becoming good for America. Pray that we become “one nation” of people who love each other rather than hating others because of a difference in our skin color. I see evidence of a change of mind and behavior already taking place in the aftermath of this tragedy with several state governors and city mayors, like Nikki Haley and Joe Riley, joining hands and hearts together with Blacks and other race people in Charleston. Across the country they’re calling for love, peace and unity – rather than bigotry, hatred and racism. Come on, let’s get onboard and make America the true “melting-pot” we say she is – God is with us!

Among Roff’s victims were four ministers of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ including Reverend Clementa Pinckney, the pastor of “Mother” Emanuel. He was also a well-known and well-respected current state senator in South Carolina. You and the nation by now know right much about this horrible, senseless, and heinous massacre. I wish I could express my thanks to Dylann Roof for helping America to actually become “one nation under God” with ethnically diverse and multiple races of people coming together – except for the horrible tragedy and resulting loss of nine innocent lives.

I trust that God will move in such a tremendous and miraculous manner that genuine love, peace, and good will soon come to fruition all across this nation, even globally. That age-old symbols, reminders, and practices of bigotry, hatred, and racism will cease. And that hate will be replaced with godly-love for all-humankind.

President Barack Obama, who also knew Reverend Senator Pinckney, flew to Charleston and gave a rousing eulogy at his homegoing service that will most definitely go down in history as one of the best-ever. Numerous notable clergy, Vice-President Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, Hillary Rodman Clinton, bi-partisan national, state, and local politicians, and many other men and women of various diverse and ethnic backgrounds attended Pinckney’s funeral service. They came together joining their hands and hearts in fellowship service, respect, and memory of God’s fallen spiritual servant the preacher – and the state and community public servant the senator. It certainly would be a great thing going forward if this type of unity, cohesiveness and togetherness continued on in America beyond the month of June – because “Black Lives Matter,” “Hate Won’t Win,” and “Love Is Stronger!” It’s all about God’s eternal and unconditional love. And as President Obama said so eloquently, it’s all about his “Amazing Grace!” Where sin abounds, grace does much more abound (Romans 5:20). God’s grace will trump the devil’s sin every time — Hallelujah!!!
