ODU and TCC Name Employees of the Month
NORFOLK
Diana Stephens recently received the Employee of the Month award at Old Dominion University; while Toni Dixon was one of five employees who received a comparable award at Tidewater Community College.
Stephens, an emergency coordinator at ODU, joined the ODU University Police Department in April 2001. Meanwhile, Dixon who was recently honored as the Support Staff Employee of the Year at TCC, serves as the administrative assistant to Dean of Student Services Emanuel Chestnut on the Norfolk Campus.
Of the ODU award, Stephens’ supervisor, C.M. Christie said in a recent news release, “She is thorough in her job duties and courteous in addressing customers at the public safety window. She is pleasant, understanding, thorough in her interactions with customers and quick to address officer needs via radio communications.”
“She handles call volume and dispatch related tasks in a timely manner,” Christie said. “Regardless of the situation, she will do everything possible to make sure her performance is steady and strong.”
The ODU Employee of the Month Selection Committee encourages employees to nominate their outstanding, “go the extra mile” colleagues and employees. This program is designed to acknowledge and reward employees whose accomplishments and/or demeanor exemplify excellence, quality service and commitment to ODU. Classified and AP faculty employees receive a framed certificate from the president, $175 and one day of leave. Hourly winners get $250, since they are not eligible to receive recognition leave.
Meanwhile, at TCC, Dixon was recognized by the college’s Classified Association for her leadership in supporting the college’s vision and core values.
“Through her work, she exemplifies leadership in community-building, advocacy for educational excellence, promotion of social justice, and the advancement of cultural awareness,” TCC noted in a press release.
She is chair of the Norfolk Campus Classified Assembly and a member of the Virginia Community College Association Black Concerns Commission and American Association of Women in Community Colleges.
TCC honored four more with awards including Professor of the Year, Linda Williams; Faculty Special Achievement Award, Elizabeth Briggs, instructor of communications; Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award, Anne MacConochie, mathematics instructor; and Administrative Employee of the Year, Steve Litherland, associate vice president for TCC’s libraries.
