The historic Norfolk (VA) Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., inducted 18 young men into its national award winning Guide Right Program Saturday December 1, 2018 at the Murray Center in Norfolk. The Chapter was the first graduate chapter to be established in Virginia October 5, 1940, and established its first Guide Right Program in March, 12, 1941 under the guidance of the late Judge James Overton.

Guide Right is the national service program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of the Guide Right program is to place the training experience and life lessons of successful men at the disposal of youth for educational and occupational guidance, primarily inspirational and informational in character.

During the 83rd National Grand Conclave of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. held in July 2017, the Chapter Guide Right program won the National Jay Crosby Award for medium size alumni chapters.

The current Guide Right Program Kappa Instructional leadership League evolved under former Polemarch Anthony O. Walters, Sr. at the Y on Granby Street, Azalea Garden Middle School and currently at Booker T. Washington High School.  It was led by John J. P. Paige, and the Kappa League was coordinated by Hughes Valmond.

In 2018, Dr. Juan M. Alexander, Executive Director of Admission Norfolk State University was appointed the Chapter’s Right Director, and Mr. Hughes Valmond continued as the Kappa Instructional Leadership League coordinator.

The Chapter Polemarch, Mr. Keith Chapman, has increased the Chapter’s commitment to Guide Right with increased finances and manpower to provide a comprehensive approach to mentoring the 23 young men currently in the Kappa Instructional leadership League. The Kappa Instructional Leadership League focuses on discipline, assurances, awareness, appearance, academics, career choice/advancement, religion, the arts, physical fitness, and leadership development.

Eighteen young men were initiated into the Kappa Instructional Leadership League Saturday December 1, 2018, at the Murray Center on Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk.
