Norfolk School Chair Jordan Receives Education Award

NORFOLK

Norfolk School Board Chairman Rodney A. Jordan recently was presented with the inaugural Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Advocate for Education Award at the closing session of the VSBA Annual Convention. This award was created to recognize board members who have demonstrated significant and outstanding leadership, commitment, and contribution to public education that has had an impact on their region and the Commonwealth, and who have shown active involvement in local, state, and federal advocacy on behalf of their division, VSBA, and public education.

Dr. Noelle Gabriel, vice-chairman of the Norfolk School Board, said, “The Norfolk School Board is exceptionally proud of Mr. Jordan for receiving this inaugural award. He is a tireless and servant leader who makes profound personal sacrifice in order to advocate on behalf of the children in Norfolk Public Schools.”

Jordan has served on the Norfolk School Board since July 2012 and has been chairman since July of this year. He served as vice-chairman of the VSBA Tidewater Region where he encouraged collaboration with representatives in the region and the state.

Additionally, Jordan served as co-chairman of the VSBA Task Force on Schools in Challenging Environments, which was established to make recommendations to the Virginia Board of Education and Virginia General Assembly on ways to help challenged schools in Virginia.

“Mr. Jordan’s valuable historical perspective, community work and daily interactions with NPS families and staff are what drive him to relentlessly pursue what is in the best interest of children,” said Gabriel.
