Newport News AKAs Sponsor 8th Annual Community Empowerment Fair At Newsome
NEWPORT NEWS
Newsome Park Elementary School was filled with people for the 8th Annual Community Empowerment Fair sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Omega Chapter (Newport News), Newsome Park Elementary School, and Riverside Health System.
Over 70 exhibitors informed the participants of resources available in the community as well as inspired the youth of possible careers for the future. Approximately 500 people were in attendance. Door prizes, food, table activities and face painters provided some of the fun inside. Outside, there were some of Newport News’ finest with their vehicles for the families to explore: the Newport News Police Department, the Newport News Fire Department and the Newport News Sheriff’s Office.
Also included in the vehicles represented were the Port of Virginia Command Center and a backhoe and truck from Virginia Natural Gas. There was so much good information and resources to empower all ages, from health, finance, housing, youth activities, and community involvement, distributed to the participants.
Exhibitors, who include some who have participated every year, were the NNPD, NNFD and NNSO, Riverside Regional Medical Center, the Office of Congressman Bobby Scott, the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Newport News Public Library System, and the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula, to name a few. The food fundraiser helped to provide funds for school activities. Planning has started for next year’s fair.
