Local Norfolk NAACP President Elected State’s Vice President

NORFOLK

Joe Dillard, the current President of the Norfolk NAACP, was elected the Vice President of the Virginia Conference of the NAACP during the organization’s recent state convention in Richmond.

 

Also, Linda Thomas of Bowling Green, who was the State Conference’s State Director of Administration in 2007,  was elected President of the State Conference replacing Carmen Taylor.

Dillard was on a slate of candidates for the 18 state conference officers headed by Taylor, who lost her bid for re-election.

Sylvia Wood of Richmond is the new State Treasurer; L.J. McCoy is the new  Secretary

Also reelected to office was John Hines as the Area II President which covers the state chapters in South Hampton Roads. Gaylene Kanoyton was  elected Area I President which encompasses the peninsula.

Dillard said that his new job will make him a member of the Executive Board of the Steering Committee. He will be a liaison to the state chapters and work in  Richmond to lobby for the state NAACP on various  issues.

Dillard has been President of the Norfolk Chapter of the NAACP since 2012.

“The State Conference of the NAACP is in a state of transition,” said Dillard.  “We have a lot of issues to  address in the coming months. But the local chapters will know that they have someone to connect with at the State level. I will do my best to make that happen.”
