LEGACIES…A CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In a joint venture with Tidewater Community College, the Urban League of Hampton Roads Young Professionals (ULHRYP) is presenting its 10th Annual Legacies— Silver Star Awards— A Celebration of Black History Month. 

This wonderful event is scheduled for 6:30PM on Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Roper Performing Arts Center located at 340 Granby Street, Norfolk , Virginia.

 

The theme for this grand affair is “Bridging the Gap, Empowering People, Advocating for the Community and Making a Difference” (BEAM) with the focus, this year, on our youth. Silver Star Awards will be presented for Education, Healthy Families/Communities, Jobs/Entrepreneurship, Diversity and Community Service.  Two special presentations — Hampton Roads Legend Award and the Young Professional of the Year Award will also be given.  A reception will follow the Legacies…A Celebration of Black History presentations.

“He Touched Me”

A Solo performance of Sacred Music

On Saturday, January 21, 2012, The Alice Rollins Circle, of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church presented  an afternoon of  music.  “He Touched Me” A Solo performance  by Mrs. Lorraine Mcfadden Bell, soprano, was  thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.  Lorraine Bell’s accompanist for this musical occasion was, former music educator and church organist, Dr. Carl G. Harris.

The Boys Choir of Hampton Roads (formerly Park Place Boys Choir), all of whom are honor students, was featured during the concert.  The Boys Choir is directed by Mr. Julius McCollough and the accompanist for the choir is, the founder, Mrs. Geraldine T. Boone.  Mrs. Dorothy W. Thomas was Mistress of Ceremony and Rev. Lawrence L. Willis did the invocation, read the scripture and gave the benediction. 

A Touched Me Testimonial was given by Mr. William J. Gaither and closing remarks were made by Jessie Pope, Moderator/Alice Rollins Circle.

A meet and greet the artist reception was held immediately following the very enjoyable concert.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS AT NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY

SPONSORED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

 

A month long calendar of events, in celebration of Black History Month, is being sponsored by the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Norfolk State University.  These activities are OPNE and FREE to the PUBLIC.

 

Some of the events of interest include the following activities. Black History Debate: Black America on February 7, 2012 in the New Student Center/138A from 6:00-9:00PM.  Also on the  7th  will be National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: FREE CONFIDENTIAL Counseling & Testing from noon until 5:00PM in the Dance Studio/Gill Gymnasium. 

The music department, on February 9, 2012, will sponsor Amadi Azikiwe Violin/Viola Recital  in the Fine Arts Building/Hamm 106.  The Nursing Department will sponsor an all day African American Health Fair, on February 15, 2012, in the New Student Center.

There will be a Jazz night in the lobby of the New Student Center beginning at 6:30PM on the 16th of February.  On February 21, 2012 The Office of Veterans Affairs and the Honors College are hosting an original Tuskegee Airman talk on “Red Tails” by Chief Master Sergeant Grant S. Williams, Sr., USAF (Retired). 

There will be, on February 28th,  an International Coffee Hour at  4:00PM, on the third floor, in the New Student Center and at 5:00PM Black Women in Local Politics: A Roundtable discussion, sponsored by the INT Department, with Active Civic Leaders will be held in room 138B of the New Student Center. 

“American Foreign Policy: An African Agenda” sponsored by the consortium for Strategic and Global Studies is scheduled from 9:00-11:00AM on February 29, 2012.
