June 5: Chesapeake Civic Chorus To Present Spring Concert
CHESAPEAKE
The Chesapeake Civic Chorus is sponsoring its annual Spring Concert on June 5, 2016, featuring Sacred Choral and Classical Compositions of the Masters. Under the theme, “Your Chorus, Your City, For You We Sing,” the concert will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Indian River Middle School with Contralto Soloist Wanda W. Jackson as the guest performer. The Chorus dates to 1986 and is under the direction of Geraldine T. Boone, who teaches Music Theory and serves as Chair of the Theory Department at Norfolk State University. She is a former Coordinator of the NSU Master of Music program. Mrs. Boone has served on numerous national, state, and local boards promoting music and the arts.
Ms. Jackson is a native of Richmond, Virginia, and a talented singer and song writer. She began singing at the age of five and for more than 30 years, she has served as a church worship leader and choir director. She began her study of music and voice at Virginia Union University in 1981 under the directions of Dr. Karen Savage. During her early singing career, Jackson sang at many festivals in the Richmond area and later became a member of the gospel group New Beginning. She is an alumnus of Norfolk State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music.
Currently, she is pursuing a Master of Music Degree in Theory and Composition at Norfolk State University. Ms. Jackson is a licensed minister. In 2010 she competed her first CD project entitled, “Songs Are Moments.” This debut album was recorded in Nashville, TN at Headroom studios for iMVP Studio, LLC. As a contralto singer, she describes her voice as rendering smooth classic jazz and classical music that has a calming and relaxing effect on both the baby boomers and more mature music lovers. Her style includes a mixture of Nancy Wilson and Elle Fitzgerald whose music exemplified purity of tone, impeccable diction phasing and intonation.
Officers and Directors for the current year include Mrs. Cheryl McClure, Chairman; Ms. Doris Peterkin, Treasurer; Mrs. Eleanor Hayslett, Secretary; Mr. Edward Hicks, Director; Dr. Kenny Rice, Director; Mrs. Carol Abramson; and Mrs. Doris P. Brown. The Chorus Board is seeking private and nonprofit corporate support in purchasing sponsorships, ads in the souvenir program, and purchasing tickets to assist the Chorus in providing scholarships and music educational programs for our youth and senior adults.
