Inspirational Message: The Humility of Wise Believers

By Gladys McElmore

The wise sayings of proverbs encourage us to be humble as we seek to please Almighty God. Job was a righteous man whom God tested to prove to Satan that faithfulness to Him was his first priority. In both of these books, we do not see the use of arrogance or boasting to accomplish anything.

In biblical terms, humility is considered a most needed virtue. Micah became an excellent example in showing us what God expects from people when he said, “Walk humbly with thy God” (Micah 6:8). It is wise for us to accept God as the most important person in our lives. He is also our best friend.

Proverbs gives practical advice for living a good life according to God’s plans for us. King Solomon and Agar were sent by God to dispense wise sayings. In Proverbs 30 there is a shift from human weakness and vice to animal behavior. Even today, with so much technology available, whatever happens remain beyond our full understanding. Being baffled by God’s divine word, we are always surprised by how little we know about anything. How are we kept humble? We must humble ourselves to realize our limitations of the countless mysteries in our world! What is a rock, a drop of water or a pushing breeze? We are grateful for all we know which cannot be compared to the unknown. Our very existence depends on God.

We learn from Matthew 5:3 that the poor in spirit are blessed for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Humility keeps us from boasting inappropriately when all that we have comes from God. Even when we think of ourselves as righteous; that too can be compared to filthy rags. How, then, can we boast?

As we look at humility, in our lives, how can we not be humble? With intensive thoughts, let us not become entrapped by thinking that we have some type of mighty power, wisdom or being covered in riches! Boasting can actually be foolish. Boasting can also be a cover-up for many insecurities and self-deceptions!

Wise believers must become humble when learning to follow God’s word. The Lord’s Prayer and Proverbs 30 acknowledge God and our dependence on Him. This prayer asks for this day’s needs and not more. Having a solid relationship with God, we confess our sins frequently and constantly ask for forgiveness. As humans we can treat each other in the same manner. Wise sayings in Proverbs, partitions and confessions in the Lord’s Prayer are repeated often because violations occur repeatedly by mistakes and weaknesses. Proverbs 30 warns about the dangers of pride and arrogance. Let us try looking around, especially outside, to learn that we have to depend on God for everything. There is nothing in nature that is man-made such as grass, trees or sunshine and many other items.

The book of Proverbs is full of wisdom from thoughts of creation and advancing details of worldly problems including confusions and evil that we experience. God continues to apply wisdom to present-day situations. He shows us the consequences of not following the plans designed for our benefit. What is more excellent than the poem of praise of an ideal wife?! According to Proverbs 4:7 wisdom is the principal thing and with all thy getting get understanding from God!
