Hayes Wins 77th District Primary In Close Race

CHESAPEAKE
Former Chesapeake Councilman Cliff Hayes Jr. won the Democratic nomination to run for the 77th State House Delegate seat which will be soon vacated by Delegate Lionell Spruill. According to the chair of the Chesapeake Democratic Party, 1,025 voters participated in a firehouse primary held Aug. 16, pitting Hayes against businessman LeOtis Williams, 51, of Suffolk, 556 to 469.
Republicans are not expected to run an opponent against Hayes whose name will appear on the November 8, 2016 ballot. Spruill won the nomination to run for the State’s Fifth Senate
District vacated by Kenneth C. Alexander when he was elected mayor of Norfolk in May. Both Hayes and Spruill are expected to win easily in the mostly Democratic and majority Black districts. Hayes served on the Chesapeake City Council from 2004 to 2012, when he decided not to run for another term.
