Twin sisters Aliyah and Alyssa Jones of Suffolk were two of the three valedictorians for the Class of 2019 at Virginia Union University. Both thanked their parents and the Suffolk community that reared them during the university’s 120th Commencement Exercises at Hovey Field on Saturday morning (May 11).
Actor, producer, and humanitarian activist Danny Glover was the keynote speaker and received a doctorate presented by VUU President Hakim Lucas.
In his remarks, Glover urged the graduates to apply their knowledge and skills gained at VUU to fight for civil rights and economic and social justice in the community and around the world.
Dr. Virginia Howardton presented VUU with an estate gift valued at 2.5 million dollars, the largest donation ever given to the University.
