Founder of Montgomery Lynching Memorial To Speak On March 19
NORFOLK
The Old Dominion University President’s Lecture Series will present Bryan Stevenson, the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Ala., on March 19 at 7:00 p.m. Stevenson will speak in the Ted Constant Convocation Center at an event that is open to the public.
The EJI seeks to eliminate injustice and mass incarceration. Stevenson and his staff members have won relief or release for more than 125 prisoners on death row.
In 2018, the Equal Justice Initiative opened the The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Legacy Museum, both in Montgomery and dedicated to the victims of American white supremacy and the lynching of thousands of Black people over several decades of racist terror. The Legacy Museum documents slavery, lynching and discrimination in the United States.
Stevenson also is a law professor at New York University and author of “Just Mercy.” Nobel Peace Prize recipient Desmond Tutu has called him America’s young Nelson Mandela. Stevenson has received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” and was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2015.
This lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited, and tickets are required for entry. Tickets are free at ODUArtsTix.com.
