Fallen officers’ memorial to be complete by May

Names of local, state and federal officers, who have died in the line of duty in Virginia Beach, will be inscribed in a special memorial to be unveiled Saturday, May 12 at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The bronze figures representing three police officers will soon come to life at 35th street and the boardwalk, commemorating, remembering and honoring law enforcement officers who worked in Virginia Beach and died in the line of duty. Ground was recently broken for the memorial. The Virginia Beach Police Foundation has raised all but about $80,000 of the project’s $450,000 cost, according to former Virginia Beach police chief and foundation president, Jake Jacocks. Work on the new one, which will stand 19 feet tall and 10 feet wide, began in 2008. The figures will be supported by a six-sided granite base, a blue light lighting their interlocking hands, their free hands reaching outwards.
