Dr. Ross-Hammond honored by NSU Music Department

NORFOLK
The NSU Division of Music presented a “Music Gala” honoring Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond on April 3 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. Dr. Hammond-Ross recently retired from Norfolk State University as a professor of music and director of service-learning and civic engagement. She also is a member of the Virginia Beach City Council. Under Dr. Carl Haywood, conductor, and Terry Butler, accompanist, the NSU Concert Choir performed five selections in tribute to the retiree.

The NSU Jazz Ensemble performed during the second half of the program under the conductorship of Stephanie K. Sanders. Also performing were the NSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the NSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble. During her tenure at NSU, Dr. Ross Hammond was the recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award. She served in the Music Department as Choir Director, Department Chair, and she became director of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement for the University.

In response to her being honored, she established a scholarship on behalf of the Ross Family to assist music students to attend conferences and concerts, in the amount of $1,000 annually. The event was well attended, including family and friends.
