Documentary On NSU’s Marching Band To Premiere In Norfolk

Norfolk State University’s marching band is the subject of an award-winning documentary to be screened locally on October 23. It is directed and produced by the Adrian and April Woodard Family.

Rise of the Legion: How The Best HBCU Found Its Voice which just won Best Documentary at the Newark International Film Festival in September 2025 will be screened to the public on Thursday, October 23, from 5-6:45 p.m. at FavorNation at The Hague, 739 Yarmouth Street.

Directed by Emmy-nominated father-son duo Adrian S. Woodard, Sr. and Adrian Woodard, II., and produced by Emmy-nominated journalist and television host April Woodard, Rise of the Legion brings to life the inspiring story of the Spartan Legion, Norfolk State University’s world-renowned marching band.

This project is a true family endeavor, created by the Woodards – a trio of husband, wife, and son – whose storytelling has earned industry recognition. Their work also honors their family’s deep ties to Norfolk State University. April Woodard is the daughter of Dr. Harrison B. Wilson, visionary former president of NSU (1975-1997), the very era when the Spartan Legion experienced its celebrated rebirth.

Presented in partnership with Norfolk State University and President, Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, the screening will highlight the cultural and historical significance of the Spartan Legion as both an artistic force and a community symbol of pride, resilience, and excellence.

Adding to the film’s impact is an impressive roster of cultural icons and entertainment leaders, including Emmy Award-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph, Emmy Award-winning actress Dawnn Lewis, Grammy Award-winning gospel artist Kirk Franklin, acclaimed actor and director Tim Reid, top music executive Phil Thornton, and Emmy-nominated television executive Jawn Murray.

“The Legion isn’t just a band – it’s a movement,” said the filmmakers. “To see legendary artists and leaders join in telling this story shows the global reach of what started right here at Norfolk State.”
