In this week’s column, let’s talk about something that’s hitting both our homes and businesses: the rising cost of technology. As we move through 2025, one thing is clear; whether you’re buying a new gaming console, managing a business’s cloud infrastructure, or even paying your monthly internet bill, costs are steadily climbing.
For consumers, tariffs on electronics have pushed the price of everyday devices upward. Gaming consoles, laptops, and smartphones have seen increases anywhere from 5 percent to 10 percent. A $50 or $100 jump may not sound like much, but for families trying to stay connected, study, or work from home, these added costs can strain monthly budgets. Internet service rates are also inching up in some regions, making digital access even more of a pocketbook issue.
On the business side, technology costs are climbing even faster. Data centers and cloud services have risen by 10 percent to 15 percent, driven by surging energy prices and the explosion of artificial intelligence workloads. A small business that depends on cloud storage or collaboration tools may now face thousands of dollars in added yearly expenses. These pressures often trickle down to employees and customers, influencing wages, hiring, and even the prices we pay for goods and services.
So, what can we do? First, awareness is key. Families can plan tech purchases around seasonal sales or explore refurbished options that stretch dollars further. Businesses can negotiate with providers, invest in energy-efficient practices, or explore shared services to keep costs in check. And as citizens, staying engaged with policy decisions on tariffs, energy, and broadband helps ensure that leaders prioritize affordability and access.
The digital economy touches us all. By staying proactive, we can better navigate these rising costs while still embracing the innovation that technology brings.
