Stop the Violence Rally” Held In Young Terrace

NORFOLK
A Stop The Violence Rally was held Saturday (March 26) at the Young Terrace Community Center. The rally was organized by Bilal Muhammad, president of the local Stop The Violence Team, in response to a recent surge in the number of multiple high-profile shootings in the city and around Hampton Roads. 

After the rally, the Stop The Violence Team sponsored a youth field trip, taking several bus loads of youth and community members to see the Harlem Globetrotters, who were playing an exhibition game in Norfolk.

Area Omegas Sponsoring Easter Food Giveaway

NORFOLK
The members of Lambda Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. are packing donated food into bags and boxes that they will distribute to needy individuals and families during the fraternity’s Easter food giveaway starting at 9 a.m., on April 16, at 937 Norfolk Square, Norfolk.

“This event is first come, first served,” Omega Psi Phi noted in a recent press release. “Help us spread the word to those in need during this time of giving, so that we can collectively help our community.”

Grove Observes Women’s History Month


PORTSMOUTH

Over 100 women turned out at Grove Church on Saturday March 26 to share fellowship and sisterhood in a morning program in recognition of Women’s History Month. The event began with a Continental Breakfast and was followed by a one-on-one interview session where New Journal and Guide Publisher Brenda H. Andrews responded to questions from WTKR News 3 anchor/reporter Jessica Larche on topics of special interest and value surrounding the health, livelihood and well being of women. The interview was followed by a Q and A period where members of the audience participated.

VSC & NSU Theatre To Present “Dreamgirls” At Wells

NORFOLK
Virginia Stage Company and Norfolk State University Theatre Company have joined forces again to present the Tony®, Grammy, and Drama Desk Award-Winning musical Dreamgirls at The Historic Wells

Theatre i downtown Norfolk from April 13 to May 1, 2022.

This production marks the third anniversary of VSC’s continued collaboration with Norfolk’s award-winning HBCU theatre company.  Dr. Anthony Stockard will direct the production  with both local professional actors and current NSU students taking the stage.

“It’s some of the most amazing song collections in musical theatre,” explained Stockard, who heads the NSU Theatre Company Department. “It is a remarkable, legendary Broadway musical for every reason imaginable…”

Group Restores Grave Marker of I.C. Norcom 

PORTSMOUTH
Israel Charles Norcom died in (1856-1916) and  he was buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery which  is part of the Mt. Calvary cemetery complex in the Prentiss Park section of Portsmouth.  At some  point in the 1970s  the headstone marking his grave disappeared from the family plot, where he was buried between his two wives. 

Recently the African American Historical Society  of Portsmouth (AAHSP) received a $300 grant from the state  to restore six markers in the cemetery including Norcom’s.

The Historic I.C. Norcom High School  is named for him.   Norcom was described as a pioneer educator, leader of his people, churchman, civic leader, businessman, fraternalist, guidance counselor, and an outstanding citizen.
