CIAA Basketball Update

Three Saturdays left in regular season Virginia State (17-3, 9-1) got wins over Bowie State (71-64) and Lincoln (72-67) to remain undefeated (5-0) and on top of the Men’s North Division standings.

Shaw (10-10, 6-4) fell at the buzzer Wednesday to Fayetteville State (72-70) but came back to knock off J. C. Smith (66-63) Saturday and now is in a tie with Livingstone for the top spot in the South, both with 4-1 division records. Livingstone got two overtime wins to earn the tie at the top, downing Saint Augustine’s Wednesday (88-85) and Winston-Salem State Saturday (101-96).

The top men’s teams in both divisions will meet Saturday as Virginia State hosts Virginia Union (17-5, 9-1, 4-1) and Livingstone (8-13, 5-6) entertains Shaw.

The Virginia Union women (18-1, 9-1, 4-1) suffered their first loss of the season Saturday as Chowan came from 20 points down to upset the Lady Panthers 79-75. The Lady Hawks (14-7, 7-4, 4-1) are now tied with VUU for first in the North Division.

In the South, Livingstone got 28 points and 16 rebounds from Zena Lovette but still needed two overtimes to get by WSSU 75-71 Saturday. The win forged a three-way tie for first place between Livingstone, Johnson C. Smith and WSSU with 4-1 division records.
