Chesapeake Men’s Group Presents Three Awards

The New Chesapeake Men for Progress Education Foundation (NCMPEF) hosted its Third Annual Black Tie Scholarship Gala on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Delta Hotel by Marriott Chesapeake. Three area citizens were awarded: Rev. Michael Toliver, Ambassador Bismarck Myrick, and Mrs. Elizabeth Eccles.

The NCMPEF is under the leadership of Al Alexander and was established in 2010 to provide scholarships to the youth of Chesapeake.

For the third year, the New Chesapeake Men for Progress Education Foundation, Inc., (NCMFPEF) held its Annual Black Tie Scholarship Gala. The event took place Saturday, November 17 at the Delta Hotel by Marriott Chesapeake with Bonita Billingsley Harris, Media and Community Relations Manager, Dominion Energy,  as the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Musical entertainment was provided by Doc Christian and the Western Branch High School Orchestra. Greetings were delivered by Chesapeake Mayor Richard W. West and Chesapeake School Board member Dr. Pat King.

The event raises funds to provide educational scholarships, mentoring and other educational programs and support to the youth of Chesapeake. Since its inception in 2010 as the non-profit arm of the New Chesapeake Men For Progress, it has provided more than $117,000 in scholarships, school supplies and programs and services to Chesapeake youth.

Three honorees were awarded for their outstanding community service: Rev. Michael R. Toliver, Pastor of First Baptist Church of South Hill; Mrs. Elizabeth Eccles,  Music Educator and Director, Mentor, and Vocalist; and Ambassador (Ret.) Bismarck Myrick, who received the Lifetime Achievement Achievement Award. He was introduced by Dr. George F. Reed, NCMFPEF Secretary, who gave an extensive review of Hon. Myrick’s years of ambassadorship service in Africa. Currently, Hon. Myrick is retired and serves as an Ambassador-in-Residence at Old Dominion University, where he also is a lecturer.

A capacity crowd watched as the group’s President Al Alexander, and his assistants, made the presentations which were followed by comments from the awardees.

A special recognition by Rev. Dr. Major Morrison, President, Holistic Foundation, Inc., was made to the family of the late esteemed Dr. William Ward, who was an organizer of the group and led the city of Chesapeake as its Mayor for a number of years.

Other participants listed on the program were Dr. Veronica Coleman, Pastor, New Jerusalem Ministries; David Washington, President, NCMFP, Inc.,; David K. Hamiliton, Vice Chairman, NCMFPEF, Inc.; Fred Jackson, Retired Magistrate; Clifton Randolph, Chairman, Education and Scholarship Committee; Rev. Dr. Harry Hall, Patristic Real Life Church. Hostesses were Carol Cherry, Kismet Nettles, Lisa McKinley, Patrice Morrison, and Kia Rodriquez.
