Bridge Corner: October 12, 2017

Hello and welcome to Tidewater Bridge Unit (TBU).

Wilma Harper Horne, one of our newest bridge directors here at Tidewater Bridge Unit, has recently received a special honor from Hampton University.

The University’s Science & Technology Building has been given a new name, and it is all due to the love and pride this distinguished alumna has for her alma mater.

Ms. Horne, a two-time graduate of Hampton, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1964 and a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education in 1968. She started her professional career as a teacher with Chesapeake Public Schools; Ms. Horne taught for seven years. In 1969, after completing a summer of post-graduate study in Computer Oriented Mathematics at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, she would spend the next 30 years of her career working in information technology for several major corporations.

After decades of dedicated leadership and service to several major corporations, Ms. Horne retired in 1999. Years later, she would demonstrate that same dedication to her ‘Home by the Sea’ – Hampton University.

On April 12, 2017, Hampton held its 4th annual Day of Giving – a 24-hour event that aims to inspire alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of the University to give a financial gift to Hampton University. In an inspiring act of philanthropy, Ms. Horne gave a seven-figure gift to the University.

Through the years, Ms. Horne has given regularly to the University, and notes that her education from Hampton continues to inspire her to give back.

Ms. Horne’s generous donation led to the renaming of the familiar Science & Technology Building. On Friday, September 22, the Wilma Harper Horne Science and Technology Hall was dedicated at a special ceremony honoring Ms. Horne and her love for Hampton. Special guests included Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey, National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. (NHAA) President Mrs. Dorothy Murray, and Student Government Association President Ms. Martha Baye.

Congratulations Wilma Harper Horne!
