Black Press Convention Ends With Attucks Jazz Concert

The New Journal and Guide introduced and hosted “Hampton Roads Glow 2018: An Evening to Celebrate 191 Years of Black Press In America” at the historic Attucks Theater in Norfolk on Saturday (June 30). The event closed out the annual summer convention of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (Black Press) which was held in Norfolk this year.

New Journal and Guide publisher/CEO Brenda Andrews served as the mistress of ceremony. Andrews introduced NNPA Chairman Dorothy Leavell and NNPA President/CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis. Dr. Chavis spoke about the history and importance of the Black Press in getting information out to the African American community that would not be covered by the corporate media outlets.

Dr. Chavis told the audience that the NNPA was also monitoring a recent police-involved shooting of an unarmed black man in Richmond. The evening’s main event featured a high-energy jazz concert by keyboardist Marcus Johnson. Two Carnival cruises were raffled, making winners of Brenda Chatman of Norfolk and Charles K. Snowden of Chicago, Ill.
