$600,000 Grant Helps Establish HU Student Success Center

HAMPTON
The Hampton University Student Success Center will open this fall, thanks to a three-year, $600,000 grant from The Mellon Foundation.
Designed to increase student graduation rates, the grant will provide $200,000 per year for the next three years. The center will offer an array of academic support services, including a new strategy called an Individual Plan for Academic Success (I-PASS), which will track student progress beginning in the freshman year. The center will provide many academic support services including counseling, tutoring, and student and faculty dialogue.
“We are honored and grateful to the Mellon Foundation for a grant of $600,000 to help establish the Student Success Center at Hampton University,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. Describing the I-PASS program, Dr. Barbara L. Inman, vice president for administrative services said, “I-PASS will fuel a sustainable increase in retention and graduation rates while also preparing our students for success.”
According to a recent press release, the new center aims to increase student retention and graduation rates by using an array of strategies including early intervention and systematic tracking of students while they are in college and after they graduate.
