Suffolk Boy Scout Attains Top Eagle Scout Rank

SUFFOLK

Myles Sterling Copeland recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

 He is a member of the Tidewater Council, Three Rivers District, Troop 934, First Baptist Church South Hill, Chesapeake, VA. Prior to becoming a Boy Scout, Myles was a Cub Scout and earned the highest award available to Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light.

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Myles earned at least 21 merit badges and demonstrated Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership.

On June 20, 2015, Myles completed his Eagle Scout Service Project. The benefactor was the Western Tidewater Free Clinic which provides free medical, dental and mental health care to indigent families in the City of Suffolk. His project was a landscape beautification project that benefited the clinic’s volunteers, staff, and the clients who frequent the facility for health care. In particular, Myles built two planter benches, and refurbished the existing landscape with the help of the community and family.

Myles, a sophomore at Kings Fork High School, is the son of Dr. Bruce A. Copeland and Mrs. Allison L. Copeland. He is the brother of Alandra Nicole Copeland and grandson of Mary Elizabeth Baker, Evelyn Faye Ledbetter, and the late James Willie Ledbetter, Sr.

He is an honor student who completed middle school with high school credits in Math and Spanish. Currently, he is enrolled in honors English, biology, and history. Since middle school, Myles have maintained positions on the King’s Fork High School junior varsity and varsity baseball, and wrestling teams.

As a Boy Scout, Myles earned 39 merit badges and has served in the following leadership positions; one term as Scribe; one term as Quartermaster; two terms as Assistant Patrol Leader; two terms as Patrol Leader; and one term as Senior Patrol Leader. Myles contributed more than 45 hours of community service and has 52 nights of camping.

He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), and the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It is an honor bestowed on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting.
