Rebecca's Well
Rebecca’s Well: Light My Candle
For thou wilt light my candle; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” (Proverbs 18:28)

“The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.” (Proverbs 20:27)

Job in his suffering, lamented his lost youth, “when God preserved him and shined His candle upon Job’s head. And by God’s light Job walked through darkness.” (Job 29:2-3)

A candle when lit gives light. The word candle is derived from the Latin “candere” which means to shine.
St. Luke declares “… the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.” (Luke 11:36)
In chapter fifteen, St. Luke records the woman lighting a candle and sweeping the house seeking the lost coin. The word “house” may be thought of as a physical domicile. Or deeper still, it is a metaphor for the spirit, soul, and body of the believer that must be swept clean of all filth, sin, and unrighteousness. For God shines through the spirit of a person.
At all times, we must bring our transgressions to the Father in prayer for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. For the Holy Spirit cannot keep communion with an unrepentant believer.
We must keep our candles lit and brightly shining at all times. Do not allow your candle to burn too low. It might go out.
The Lord will relight your spirit/candle if you just ask him – ”Lord please light my candle. It’s getting dark within. My eye is not single (wholly lit) and my body is getting dark; I can’t see my way.”
Then, “the spirit itself bearest witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.” (Romans 8:16)
Let us attempt to understand how the Holy Spirit works and bears witness with our spirit. The dictionary helps with the definition of the term, “twine.” Twine as a transitive verb (tr) has several meanings: (1) to twist together; intertwine, as threads. (2) to form by twisting or interfacing. (3) to encircle or coil about. (4) to wind, coil, or wrap around something.
Twine when used as a noun (n) is a strong string or cord. This means to me that the Holy Spirit can be understood as a strong string or cord that wraps around our spirit by encircling or coiling about, to twist our spirit into oneness with His Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ. So, there is only one spirit in the child of God whose spirit is intertwined with the Holy Spirit, walking in the Spirit and controlled by the Spirit. For it is written. “He or she that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” (1 Cor. 6:17)
Then the individual believer’s spirit so intertwined or interlaced by the Holy Spirit becomes “the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.” (Proverbs 20:27)
God’s Holy Spirit shines as a beacon light in the life of true Christians illuminating all their ways and actions. Such persons become spiritually enlightened as powerful magnetic fields drawing others to Jesus Christ, as they are conduits of God’s thoughts manifesting in speech and action.
When persons’ spirit/candles please the Lord, they become open-minded, “…the eyes of their understanding are enlightened…” (Ephesians 1:18) and they become the wisdom keepers and knowledge-based, born teachers, leaders, preachers, counselors, humanitarians and light-bearers of a new world order.
