February 26: Norfolk To Honor 6 With Walk of Fame Star

The City of Norfolk will honor six musicians  with a star on the Walk of Fame along the 300 block of Granby Street on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Roper Theater.

The Virginia Arts Festival is producing the free event that will honor these six local legendary musicians: Gordon Banks, Lenis Guess, Bob Zentz, Adolphus Hailstork, Jack Holmes, and Margie Day.

The event will honor posthumously, inductee Jack Holmes, the first African-American disc jockey in Virginia. Holmes gained notoriety in the sixties with his popular early morning radio show.

Inductee Margie Day, jazz standards and former lead singer for the Griffin Brothers Orchestra, Day twice reached the R&B Top Ten between 1950 and 1951.

It will also honor Banks, Marvin Gaye’s musical director and band member, voted as one of the 100 top guitarists in America by Rolling Stone magazine.
   
Guess was a singer, songwriter and producer, hailed as a vital part of the Norfolk Sound that made Hampton Roads an epicenter of pop, rock and soul in the 60s and founder of D.P.G. Records.
   
Zentz, Norfolk folk music legend and founder of the several Folk music ventures.  After cutting his teeth as a songwriter for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Zentz returned to Norfolk.

Hailstork is accomplished music composer and professor music at Old Dominion University.
