African-American Book Talk, Genealogy Class At Slover Library
NORFOLK
The Slover Library will be hosting a book talk by Diane Kiesel on the life of Norfolk native Dr. Dorothy B. Ferebee on Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 650 at Slover Library.
The book “She Can Bring Us Home” tells the story of Dorothy Ferebee (1898–1980), an African-American obstetrician and civil rights activist from Washington, D.C. At a time when African-Americans faced Jim Crow segregation, desperate poverty, and lynch mobs, she advised presidents on civil rights and assisted foreign governments on public health issues.
Diane Kiesel tells Ferebee’s extraordinary story of struggle and personal sacrifice to a new generation. Kiesel, a former writer and now an acting justice for the New York State Supreme Court, came across Dr. Ferebee and decided she needed to bring Dr. Ferebee’s story out of the shades.
